108 Divya Desams !! Thirupper Nagar – Sri Appakudathan Perumal Temple !!

Thirupper Nagar is one of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu, also known as one of the Pancha Ranga Kshetram situated in Thiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu. The other Pancha Ranga Kshetrams are Sri Rangam, Thiru Indalur, Sri Rangapatanam and Kumbakonam.



This temple is located on the northern side of River Cauvery and 10 kms from Lalgudi and 20kms from Trichy.   There is another Divya Desam of Lord Vishnu Thiru Anbil Sri Vadivazhagiya Perumal Temple also can be visited which is just 3kms away from here.

Mangalasasanam – Thirumangai Alwar, Periyalwar, Thirumazhisai Alawar and Nammalvar sung praising the glories of Sri Appakudathan Perumal in this temple.  This sacred place is the Moksha sthal of Sri Nammalvar.



Festivals – Panguni Uthiram Brahmostavam is one of the famous festivals here.  The 10 day long festival also includes Kalyana Mahotsavam on seventh day and car festival on the 10th day on Uthiram day celebrated widely.  Pakal Pathu and Rapathu Utsavam, Vaikundha Ekadashi, Mohini Alankaram and procession of Lord on the day before Vaikundha Ekadashi.



The legend has that King Ubamanyu was cursed by Sage Durvasa and lost all his glories. He was advised to visit this sacred to get rid of the curse.   He arrived in this holy land and settled here.  He fed thousands of people on daily basis.  The most pleased Lord Vishnu disguised in the form of an old man and appeared before the King.  The old man was received by the King with due respect and honor to have meal.    Surprisingly, the old man consumed the entire meal prepared for thousands of people.  King Ubamanyu was alarmed to see the unusual incident, he earnestly enquired the old man what else he would like to have with the meal.  The old man sincerely asked for a pot of sweet Appam (dumplings made of Jaggery and rice).  King Ubamanyu passionately provided a pot full of Appam to the Lord.  The most compassionate Lord blessed King Ubamanyu and got relieved from the curses. 



There are different myths associated to this temple that are Sage Markandeya was blessed by Lord Vishnu in this temple and Indra’s pride was shattered in this sacred land.  This is the only one Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu where the sweet dumplings are offered as Bhog to Lord.   



It is believed that the childless couple would be blessed with virtuous offspring upon offering butter and sugar to Lord Santhanagopalan in this temple.



This temple remains open from 7.00AM to 12.00PM in the morning and 4.00PM to 8.00PM in the evenings.
